When you make your appointment please ask if you prefer to see a particular veterinary surgeon.
On arrival you will be greeted by our friendly experienced reception staff who will register your details on our computer system (if we don't know you already) This information will then be available at all of our surgeries.
After a consultation in one of our two consulting rooms, our veterinary surgeons may recommend investigations using our our up to date diagnostic equipment including
X-ray, and Laboratory testing (in house and using a high quality external laboratory)
If needed we offer major and minor surgery including dentistry soft tissue surgery and orthopaedics.
If your pet needs to stay in for treatment we have separate cat ward and isolate ward.

Hugh Gilmore MVB MRCVS. Senior Partner. Qualified from Trinity College Dublin in 1977. Hugh joined Downes in 1984 to run the newly opened Thorpe Bay surgery. He has extensive experience in small animal medicine and handles the increasingly popular pet passport scheme and foreign travel for pets. Hugh is married with four children. He has three cats rescued from Cats Protection, Yogi (a talkative ginger), Smartie (an elegant tortoiseshell) and Tufty (a boisterous black). Hugh enjoys cycling to keep fit and playing golf. |

Carol Jones BVMS MRCVS. Practice Partner. Qualified from Glasgow Vet School in 1985. Carol joined Downes in 1985 shortly after qualifying from Glasgow and initially worked at the Rayleigh surgery. Carol now manages the Thorpe Bay surgery with Hugh. Carol is a very experienced clinician and is happy to see all pets and the full range of cases that we deal with at Downes. She has a special interest in dog, cat and rabbit medicine. Carol has a cat called Fred (seen with her in the photo), who was adopted as a rescue case, and Rumble who is a lively Parsons Jack Russel Terrier. Carol is president of her local dog training club. Carol is married with three children, is an active member of a local church and is a keen watcher of rugby (both of her sons play !)

The staff at the Thorpe Bay branch are a dedicated team of qualified nurses, student nurses and experienced receptionists

The Thorpe Bay surgery has two consulting rooms, air conditioned kennels, an isolation area, preparation room with dental, x-ray, laboratory facilities and an operating theatre (where minor and major surgery is carried out including orthopaedics).
Ample parking is accessible at the rear of the surgery via Armitage Road.
