The staff at the Downes Medivet Thorpe Bay surgery are a friendly team of qualified veterinary surgeons, nurses, receptionists and a dedicated kennel assistant.

The Thorpe Bay surgery has three consulting rooms, air conditioned kennels, an isolation area, preparation room with dental, x-ray, laboratory facilities and an operating theatre (where minor and major surgery is carried out including orthopaedics).

Ample parking is accessible at the rear of the surgery via Armitage Road

When you make your appointment please ask if you prefer to see a particular veterinary surgeon.

During your Visit

On arrival you will be greeted by our friendly experienced reception staff who will register your details on our computer system (if we don’t know you already). This information will then be available at all of our surgeries.

Facilities

After a consultation in one of our three consulting rooms, our veterinary surgeons may recommend investigations using our our up to date diagnostic equipment including X-ray, and Laboratory testing (in house and using a high quality external laboratory)

Surgery

If needed we offer major and minor surgery including dentistry soft tissue surgery and orthopedics. If your pet needs to stay in for treatment we have kennels and an isolate ward.

Hugh Gilmore

Veterinary Surgeon, Clinical Director

Hugh Gilmore MVB MRCVS, qualified from Trinity College Dublin in 1977.

Hugh joined Downes in 1984 to run the newly opened Thorpe Bay surgery. He has extensive experience in small animal medicine, and handles the increasingly popular pet passport scheme and foreign travel for pets. Hugh is a very experienced clinician and is happy to see all pets from cats and dogs to tortoises.

Hugh is married with four children, and is a keen cyclist in his spare time.

Carol Jones

Veterinary Surgeon, Clinical Director

Carol Jones BVMS MRCVS,  qualified from Glasgow Vet School in 1985.

Carol joined Downes in 1985 shortly after qualifying from Glasgow and initially worked at our Rayleigh surgery.

Carol is a very experienced clinician and is happy to see all pets and the full range of cases that we deal with at Downes. She has a special interest in dog and cat medicine.

Carol has a cat called Fred who was adopted as a rescue case, and Rumble who is a lively Parsons Jack Russel Terrier.  Carol is president of her local dog training club. Carol is married with three children, is an active member of a local church and is a keen watcher of rugby (both of her sons play!)

 

Van Hung Hua

Veterinary Surgeon

Van Hung Hua BVSc MRCVS, qualified from the University of Sydney in 1996.

Van is originally from Australia where he qualified from the University of Sydney in 1996. Van is an accomplished surgeon and diagnostician, and primarily works at our Thorpe Bay Surgery.

After qualifying from university, Van worked at the Darwin Vet Hospital for 12 months before moving to the UK. He worked at a small animal practice for several years, where he met his wife. Van joined Downes in 2011 and since working at Downes Van has completed a Masters Degree in Aquatic Medicine. Most of Van’s spare time is taken up by his young family, passion for DIY and visits to the gym.

 

Jaclyn Chitty

Veterinary Surgeon

Jaclyn Chitty BVMS MRCVS, qualified from the University of Glasgow in 2015

Jaclyn joined the team at Downes in April 2016. She has a special interest in surgery and emergency medicine. Jaclyn has two dogs; a pug and a golden retriever, but they are all the way in Malaysia. In her spare time Jaclyn enjoys playing the piano, watching Korean variety shows, outdoor activities and trying new things such as yummy foods!

Zuzana Dzurikova

Veterinary Surgeon

Zuzana Dzurikova MVDr MRCVS, qualified from the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Brno, Czech Republic, August 2014.

Before moving to Southend, Zuzanna worked as a veterinary surgeon in South Wales in a small animal practice. Zuzana is interested in soft tissue surgery and she would like to improve and gain more experience in orthopaedic surgery. Zuzanna is also interested in avian medicine and exotic birds. At home she has a cute cat called Archibald and outside work enjoys horse riding, hiking, bird watching, yoga and running.

Venetia Coggles, RVN

Head Veterinary Nurse

Venetia qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1993, and has worked in several small animal veterinary practices since starting as a trainee in 1990. In 2007 Venetia joined the team at Downes as the Head Nurse at the Thorpe Bay surgery.

As head nurse, Venetia likes the challenge of ensuring the smooth running of the Thorpe Bay Surgery, and enjoys nurse clinics and helping to nurse poorly patients back to health. In her spare time Venetia enjoys playing badminton and travelling.

 

Coralie Compagna, RVN

Deputy-Head Veterinary Nurse

Coralie has been at Downes for over 20 years, and is one of our most experienced veterinary nurses.  Coralie qualified as a veterinary nurse in 1997 and is deputy head nurse at our Thorpe Bay surgery. As well as assisting in operations, nurse clinics and general nursing, Coralie helps Venetia with the day to day running of the surgery and ensures insurance forms are completed and sent off as soon as possible.

 

Jade Bell, RVN

Veterinary Nurse

Jade worked at small animal practices in Canvey and Benfleet for nine years before qualifying as a veterinary nurse in 2013 and joining our team at Downes. Jade likes all animals, and enjoys nurse clinics and advising clients on preventative health care. Jade has three dogs, a Cocker Spaniel called George, a one eyed Labrador called Louis and a Chihuahua called Loki, a cat called Figit and a horse called Kyra.

Jacqui Lambert, RVN

Veterinary Nurse

Jacqui has worked at Downes since 2005, and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2008. In 2009 Jacqui took a year off to go travelling, including volunteering with orangutans in Borneo. When Jacqui returned to the UK, she rejoined the team at Downes, and now works part-time to fit in with raising her young family. Jacqui enjoys nursing pets back to health and nurse clinics. Jacqui has a pet cat called Betsy.

Marian Wither

Head Receptionist

Marian is our head receptionist at our Thorpe Bay surgery, and has worked at Downes since 2000. Marian enjoys the day to day challenges of her role and the interaction with the Clients and their pets. Marian has two pet cats named Garfield and General, three chickens and two pet tortoises.
