The staff at the Downes Medivet Rayleigh surgery are a friendly team of qualified veterinary surgeons, nurses and experienced receptionists.

The Rayleigh surgery has two consulting rooms, kennels, with a separate cat ward and an isolate area, preparation room with dental, x-ray, laboratory and ultrasound facilities and an operating theatre (where minor and major surgery is carried out including orthopaedics). The surgery also boasts a back garden where our canine residents can be walked, as well as a purpose built run for rabbits and guinea pigs.

When you make your appointment please ask if you prefer to see a particular veterinary surgeon.

During your Visit

On arrival you will be greeted by our friendly experienced reception staff who will register your details on our computer system (if we don’t know you already). This information will then be available at all of our surgeries.

Facilities

After a consultation in one of our two consulting rooms, our veterinary surgeons may recommend investigations using our our up to date diagnostic equipment including X-ray, and Laboratory testing (in house and using a high quality external laboratory).

Surgery

If needed we offer major and minor surgery including dentistry soft tissue surgery and orthopedics. If your pet needs to stay in for treatment we have separate cat ward and isolate ward.

The surgery also boasts a back garden with a lawn where our canine residents can be walked and where rabbits and guinea pigs can benefit from fresh air and fresh grass in the purpose built run.

Oliver Smith

Veterinary Surgeon, Clinical Director

Oliver Smith BVM&S MRCVS, qualified from Edinburgh Vet School in 1986.

Oliver joined Downes in 1988 and is our most experienced surgeon. Oliver is happy to treat all pet animals and has a special interest in orthopaedics and ultrasonography.

In his spare time Oliver plays in an orchestra, and enjoys taking part in physical challenges such as the Tuff Mudder race.

Ioana Junquera

Veterinary Surgeon

Ioana Junquera, DVM MRCVS, graduated in 2004 from León University, Spain.

Originally from Spain, Ioana came to the UK in 2005 and became a member of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Ioana has practiced Veterinary Medicine in a wide variety of situations from Wildlife Rescue Centres in Spain to charity work treating and neutering strays in the Indian Himalayas.

Ioana joined Downes in 2011. She has developed a keen interest in unusual and exotic pets, especially rabbits, guinea pigs and all other small mammals. She is also very happy to treat birds and reptiles.

In her spare time, Ioana enjoys photography and travelling, and has a kitten adopted from the cats protection league.

Emma Prior, RVN

Head Veterinary Nurse and Receptionist

Emma joined Downes as a trainee in 2003 and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2007. In 2008 Emma became head nurse and is responsible for the day to day running of the Rayleigh surgery. Emma enjoys assisting our veterinary surgeons with surgical procedures, and offering preventative health care and dietary advice during nurse clinics. Emma has two cats called Matilda and Tinkerbell, a pet Yorkshire Terrier called Willow and a pet rabbit called Prince Caramel.

Sam Hilton, RVN

Senior Veterinary Nurse

Sam joined Downes in 2004 as a trainee and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2008. In May 2014 Sam was promoted to Senior Veterinary Nurse. Sam enjoys surgical nursing and assisting veterinary surgeons with operations. Sam has a pet Lovebird called Cedric, and enjoys horse riding in her spare time.

Laura Purssell, RVN

Veterinary Nurse

Laura worked at a small animal and exotics practice near Wickford, where she trained and qualified as a veterinary nurse in 2011, before joining the team at Downes in 2012. Laura enjoys all aspects of veterinary nursing but especially enjoys nursing animals back to health while they stay with us in the hospital. Laura has a horse called Sidney and a pet cat called Holly.
